Bruce, if this is your '84 500SEC then it *could* be the tow-away
sensor of the Alarm system. In the early alarm systems (prior to car
chassis end number A273146), there was included an anti-tow-away
sensor, (on the W126, you can reach and disable it behind the trunk
lining, upper left forward corner. It is component N27). This sensor
was problematic, often giving false alarms. You can just unplug the
N27, and this might solve your problem, leaving the alarm system
otherwise intact.
