Hi Richard,
Not really an answer, but aside from the rt/exhuast manifold, the item that generates a whole lot of heat back there 'might' be the catalytic converter or the crossover pipe at the rear of the engine (assuming a stock US spec car).
just a thought, as the location is about right......
