Hi Bob:

No matter how you cut it that's a messy job with gas dripping all over you until the pressure is released.  You should use a compression clamp on the main line before removal.  I'd look at the metal line between pump and filter and replace it if it's corroded badly.  Mine as well do the filter at the same time.  And you'll need new crush washers as the old ones will leak.  When you are all done have someone start the car and check carefully for leaks before driving away.

Just my 2.  It's the messiest job I've done on a Mercedes!
