There is special hydraulic fluid for the hydropneumatic suspensions.   
You should use MB fluid or you can use aftermarket fluid made by  
companies such as Meyle.  Any dealer will have the fluid.

As far as the level is concerned, at the proper level, the container  
will be approx. 1/2 to 2/3 full.  The amount of fluid in the system  
or level of fluid has NOTHING to do with the riding height of the car.

DO NOT use ATF in the hydraulic system.  Use fluid specified for the  
job.  The system requires 2.0 liters of fluid.
