[W126 Coupe] Mr Magoo's 380SEC Pros and Cons

My folks have a 87' 420sel with 287,000 and have never had any major work done to the car other than the maintenance items. Such as basics, shock,brakes,timing chain, ball joints,etc.  The usual stuff with these cars.  But the motor has never had any problems at all.  There is a huge difference in ride and engine power with the 560sel. If you want the ride and the power and all the bells and whistles go with the 560sel.  The 420sel is a severely de-tuned sedan. Still a nice car. But lacks the badge that says I'm top of the line.

  420's have horrible problems with left cam oilers. They break cams all day long. Trust me, I sell them every day.

  I don't know of any particular problem with the 420 engine.  The engine appears to be developed directly from the 380.  I have heard a number of people dump on the 420 but, as I said, personally I have had no experience with them good or bad.  

  Why '86 - '91?  Because that's when they were offered in the 126.  They replaced the 380 from '80 - '85.  Maybe it was an attempt to provide a bit more power?

  I suspect there is nothing "less desireable" about the 420.  I only know one person with a 420SEL, 225,000 Km and he has had no abnormal problems.

  I guess I am asking if anyone with experience with the 420's to comment.   I intend to ask some questions myself.  I'm curious now.
