I can now confirm that to be the case. My 560SEC was running so roughly
yesterday that I dug out two wires that were part of a set originally
meant for my 450SL, and replaced the two worst ones on the 560. The
distributor end is a bit different but some duct tape and the dust cap
hold them in place. The improvement in performance is outstanding.
To follow up, I took the end off one of the "bad" wires. The resistor
did not unscrew from the wire, instead the wire twisted loose from its
metal end cap, leaving the cap inside the ceramic resistor body. I cut
the rubber boot off that ceramic, and the resistor inside it is a nice
solid 1000 ohms. Conclusion: The resistor had not failed, it was the
connection between the wire and the resistor inside the boot that was bad.
In any case, it will soon matter not, because a new set of wires,
distributor cap and rotor are all on their way from Jonathan. They will
be my coupe's "100,000 mile birthday present".
Has anyone figured out yet if the distributor advance weights should
have only one spring? Thanks!
