Good morning Daniel,
Funny you should mention this. I also have a '83 380 SEC. To make things 
worse, I have a '93 600 SEC and just got done dealing with that very issue. With 
the 600 weighing in at darn near 5,000lbs, it's no wonder they're a little 
loose. 
I did a few things and I'm currently happy with the ride and handling.

Call Luke at the Tire Rack. He set me up with 18" AMG's and 235x50 P-Zero's

Replaced the shocks. Get your checkbook out. This will make the wheels and 
tires look good.

Last and the biggest change maker, have the main steering gear lower. By 
doing this, the teeth in both gears now set tighter together. There is next to no 
play in the steering wheel now. Your right about the model "T." The w-140's 
are completely different animals.
