[W126 Coupe] Bad Alternator

When you said rheostat you meant the one for the climate control system right? In that case by instrument panel, by instruments you mean things like climate control buttons, NOT things like speedometer and tachometer, right? If I'm right...
Pull out your ashtray, pull out the insert in the ashtray. Now you see 2 screws at the bottom of the ashtray frame holding it in place. unscrew those and yank the ashtray frame out. Remove stereo (on the 1985 and earlier you just pull down those two metal tabs with your fingernail while pushing out the stereo. I think the 1986 and later need DIN stereo removal tools...any stereo shop will have them).
Now, on top of the frame that was around the stereo you see two screws holding the wood in place, undo those. The wood slides down and pops out, so just slide it down.
All the switches are connected to the wood, so unplug them, and take the wood off. Now everything is exposed. I would mark where the edges of the screws holding the climate control unit are with a pen, otherwise you'll have to keep undoing and redoing them to adjust how far out the climate control unit is.

Richard, you are right. I removed the alternator and had it tested by a alternator shop I have used for many years. Alternator is toast and I have a new one to put in after I remove the pot. I am just not willing to put these news parts back in when I know the pot is bad.

Any suggestions on taking out the instrument panel. I have not been able to locate the screws.

The rheostat by itself can be replaced. $84 IIRC. I think youre problem
is the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator, and not the
alternator itself The brushes wear down creating a bad contact.
