Hi Calvin:
If they do not let water in where the rubber is not cracked clear through you should be fine. A tell tail sign the lower balljoints need to be replaced will be a creaking (like a wooden boat) when you go over a speed bump or equivalent. The mechanic will check them for play with a pry bar if you ask.
They are a whole lot of fun to replace!
Dick

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Cracked rubber for lower ball joints
The rubber on the lower ball joints of my 86 560 SEC AMG are cracked. The mechanic says I should not worry unless they are loose. I plan to take them in tomorrow to have him look at them just to be sure. any comments guys? I am planning to take a trip to Chicago leaving on Thursday.
Cal
Sincerely,
