I've run into this a couple of times on cars at our shop. This was on a 560SL and a 350SDL, both 722 series trannies, the front clutch pack basket has a pin cast into the back of it, and it had broken off on both of these cars. Since the tranny had to be torn down to replace the basket, we went ahead and replaced all the internal seals and clutch packs too. But the broken pin is what was causing the reverse delay. Rebuild or replace the tranny.

The gears are switching normally. It's only in reverse. I've also checked and changed the transmission fluid. It was fine.
