what i did was to remove the gauges and i took some  orange ( or  black) 
spray paint and  sprayed some in the cap and then using a match end  ( the torn 
off part)  like a paint brush dabbed the paint on the  needles but first use  a 
piece  of paper under the needle to catch any  drips   the paint will thicken 
up nicely in a short time and this  really helps to coat things  ..........2 
years ...no problems
