Received imfo back from Mercedes Benz Canada.

Quote: Unfortunately Mercedes Benz Canada will not be able to confirm a vehicle can be imported into the United States. I suggest you contact the US Dept. of Transportation directly and/or Mercedes Benz US at 1-800-367-6372 - Erin Somerville/Costomer relations.
Mike I did'nt know there was a difference in Vin # between countries could you further explain this.

My 1986 sel and sec are considered North American cars when they arrived in Canada from Mercedes, there was no distinction between an American car or a US car. Importing these cars from the states to Canada is easy, don't know about the other direction.

I'm not familiar at all with importing from Canada, but if it doesn't have a US VIN, the car from Japan will have to go through a Registered Importer. That RI will have to provide documents to the DOT that the safety requirements have been met and prove to the EPA that it meets emissions standards. It will likely have to have the oxygen sensor added, which would mean that a US engine computer would have to be in place. Keep in mind that at 21 years old, the EPA doesn't care anymore and at 25 years old the DOT doesn't care either. California will abuse you for a car that is 1974 and newer.

    Thanks,

      Jim

I have had this question before. I recently e-mailed Mercedes Benz Canada provided them with the Vin # and the Engine # and asked for their imput as to shipping the unit to the US. waiting for their response. I was on a import brokers site that listed allowable imports from Canada the 1988 560 SEL shows can be imported, but that was if originaly exported to Canada, its unknown at this time if a grey market unit from Japan will be allowed. I had no problem passing our emmissions test in Ontario. I had to replace the cat to pass. I believe this unit has no oxygen sensors this may be a problem. Have you inquired with your local DMV and/or reviewed your EPA forum 3520-1 and Dot forum HS-7 as to this unit.

PS I believe you have a gov site that explains car imports from different countries. I do no any import has to go through a gov approved import broker, has to be steamed clean on the under carrige etc.

      Hope this helpfull imfo.

I posted a friends Japan auto importing site on the W126 forums this morning.

go... http://www.skyeservice.com you might contact him his name is Martin possibly he has shipped cars to the US and may have some advise.

      Thanks

      Gary

Gary, is that Euro 560SEL eligible for USDOT and USEPA certification? I'm told you can bring recent-model Euro cars into Canada easily, though you can't bring them into the US and title them; is that correct?
