the answer from the rebuilder....

perhaps the alignment of the trans to the engine was not correct.    this 
would cause a "misalignment between the torque converter and the pump drive" 
   This misalignment would wear the "gear" connection so that the pump would 
not be driven.

I did not have the torque converter out of the housing when i had the engine 
out of the car.  If the TC slipped forward during the reassemble it may have 
disengaged from the pump drive. the trans bolted nicely to the engine with 
not much effort to go over the pins.  the 4 small bolts connecting the 
flywheel to the TC went in with no wrench until the bolts seated and then 
tightened with a wrench.

No way to tell anymore until trans out of car.   I am doing that today.

Other options still include 1. a bad converter,  2. a bad pump
