Mark,
Most of the recommendations are you do not have to, because the lower ones
are always in an oil bed.
Also it is a lot more expensive, because the valve heads has to be removed.
I bought the car from a woman who drove the car only in LA and not on the
freeways and the car had 118,000 miles. And the car was using oil.
I told my mechanic also to remove the valve heads to check the valves and I
had two leaking valves.
Then we find out that the lower guides were also in a bad shape and I had
them replace at the same time.
