³My local shop is strongly recommending that the lower
guides be changed along with the uppers, chain
tensioner, and timing chain.
Is it "really" necessary\a good idea to change the
lowers? Or is my shop recommending the lowers be
changed because their service manual says so?²
Hi Mark,
I had mine done in 2004 at an MB dealership outside of Boston. They did the
chain, the 3 upper guide rails, tensioner, tensioner rail, cleaned out the
L/Rt cam oil feed lines & replaced the little plastic oil nozzles. They did
not change the lower guide rails. As there is a whole lot of oil flying
around down there, they didn¹t feel it was necessary. BTW: the fellow who
works on my car has hair more grey than mine and has lots of W126
experience. I trust him implicitly.
For even more info, should you choose... Take a look at the W126 forum on
Benzworld and do a search for ³Timing Chain². There is a lively discourse on
the subject quite often.
