[W126 Coupe] Fuel Pumps and relay

I've heard that if it's the middle of winter, unless you've been on the
highway for hours or something, it never gets hot enough to pass the
does-the-fan-stop-spinning-as-soon-as-you-shut-off-the-engine test. Is
this correct?

Hi Iain:

Yes the viscous fluid in the head of the clutch will loose it's ability
to hold the fan fully engaged at low rpm's. It is by design supposed to
release the fan at higher rpm's (something like 3-3500). An aged unit
will result in higher temperatures at idle or in stop and go traffic
especially on a hot day with AC on.

I've been through (3) on several MB's in the past few years. Seems the
wear and tear is a function of mileage from my less than expert
perspective. So, I'd say if it's letting go of the pressure fit clip up
front it's time for a 'new' one and they run about $200 or so for the
Behr brand.

Dick

		Iain:

No contribution on the fuel pump relay other than to say
if the circuit is not designed to cycle on/off then toggling it on
should be just fine. However, I have no experience or information to
support this theory.

As for the viscous clutch. The more obvious question is
have you tested the fan clutch to see if it's at the end of it's life
and in need of replacement? I am now in the habit of replacing the fan
clutch with radiator, hoses and tstat at or about 120k miles or so. How
many miles on your fan clutch?

If you find it needs replacement, buy only the Behr
brand. The other aftermarket unit costs 1/2 the price but on two that
I've tried they have been junk right out of the box.

		Regards,

		Dick

Does anyone know if I will create any problems
by jumping my fuel pump relay with a switch while I'm waiting for a new
relay? Also notice that the new relays are 10 pin, as mine is 9 pin and
one alignment (dummy) pin. Pins match up is the same. Repaired this
relay 3 years ago and no problems since. Cannot find a obvious defect
yet.

Also, does anyone know what the plate on the
front of the viscous fan does. Mine came off, broke the plastic cage and
sliced 2 fins out of my rad. It didn't stay lodged in the rad so "do I
need a new plate?"
