Hi Mike:
The first step I would recommend is to borrow an IR temp meter and aim it at the top of the thermostat housing and take several readings of both this meter and your dash instrument gauge to determine the accuracy of the IC gauge.
Dick.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] OVER HEAT QUESTION
hi all i have a 85 500 sec
and with the air on and electrical fan on after a short while of driving the temp gauge goes to and slightly past the third line of the temp gauge( when it does this i turn off the air and worry) it comes back down to approx less than half way between the second line (normal?)??? ... now here is the kicker ( oh boy) the gauges were repaired needeles removed( by a person who shall remain nameless) and may not be in the correct locations .... so i dont know it the engine is actually getting wayyy too hot how do i know if it is a clogged rad or a bad fan clutch or nothing
how do i figgure this out????
