Did you look at the rear tires (tyre's)? They may be scalloped or cupped
treads!

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Noises at 80 km/h
Hello all,
I have been experiencing a low hum at freeway speeds.
Starts at about 70 km/h and worsens as the speed gets higher.
Becomes more noticeable when you take the foot off the gas.
It's subtle and there is no vibration in the steering wheel but it's
annoying because the car has lost its smoothness. The car feels a bit
'agricultural' at present.
I've recently replaced the donuts on the tailshaft and other rear end
rubbers.
I suspected a bent rim / tyre out of round but nothing turned up after an
alignment.
Any theories on drivetrain-related items?
The car is due to go to the mechanic for another look tomorrow.
