Hi Jason:

What is the exact specification on the Mobil 1 for the differentials on any of the model year 126 chassis (83-91) label so I can recognize it on the local store shelf???

I had the same problem. I replaced the driveshaft support bearing. While this helped it did not eliminate the problem. To make a long story short here, It turned out that it was the rear end going bad. It got louder the longer I drove on it. Replaced the rear end with a bone yard one and it has been fine ever since. By the way I replaced all the seals in the rear end before I installed it and filled it with mobile one syenthic gear lube. Its been bone dry for 3 years now !

Also, for what ever this is worth, I;ve noticed that the gear lube on the older Mercedes is burnt. When gear lube goes bad its really smells and will be very, very dark if not black in color.. It should be the color of fresh motor oil. I like the mobile because its already got the P-tac additive so no matter what your rear end calls for your safe. And I've seen a huge improvement with rear end function with the mobile lube. I

    Hello all,

I have been experiencing a low hum at freeway speeds.

Starts at about 70 km/h and worsens as the speed gets higher.

Becomes more noticeable when you take the foot off the gas.

It's subtle and there is no vibration in the steering wheel but it's annoying because the car has lost its smoothness. The car feels a bit 'agricultural' at present.

I've recently replaced the donuts on the tailshaft and other rear end rubbers.

I suspected a bent rim / tyre out of round but nothing turned up after an alignment.

    Any theories on drivetrain-related items?

The car is due to go to the mechanic for another look tomorrow.
