You forget,
The 119 cost me $5000 total (no labor cost), The V12 cost me about $8K
(no labor cost). If I sell the 119 with trans, it will cost me around $3K
net difference to upgrade to the V12. I spent nearly $16k for the 6.0L
117 motor, got $13,500 back so not much difference.
That makes $5K plus $2500 = $7500 TOTAL over 6 years. That upgraded the
whole engine, transmission, all belt drive stuff, computers, etc.
Of course, if someone else was to have it done, it could approach $100K
easy. I would estimate $7000-$10000 in just labor alone for the V12 +
engine.
I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to go buying new V12s, rather used or
better yet, a whole wrecked car would be best.
The 10 computers plus EZLs and harnesses are $17500 from Mercedes. The
long block with belt-drive items. The two throttle motors are $7000 for
the pair, the smog pump is $2000 with the clutch, etc., etc.
Definately, buy used stuff and go through it all.
Also, you CANNOT use a W140 V12 engine for direct fit. The upper oil pan
will NOT work at all. It MUST be a 600SL motor/lower oil pan. I bought
an S600 motor and had to swap out the upper and lower oil pans and oil
pump. Unless you have some connections, be prepared to pay $2000 for that
setup alone.
The A/C manifold from the W140 engine will not work with the W126 neither.
A new manifold from a 600SL is $780. The air boxes from the W140 won't
work as well.
However, the W140 V12 has more hp than the R129 V12. The 600SL is rated
at 389hp, the 600SEL at 402hp.
Finally, the motor mounts have to be machined from aluminum blocks for
correct fit. We have a Bridgeport in house so it works for us. We even
stamped MB part numbers on the mounts for laughs.
So....buy a whole wrecked car...shop Ebay....that's where I bought all my
engines from so far.
