Well, I'd say the sound was improved a lot...or not at all depending on
what kind of music you listen to. If somebody is looking for a bass
thumping system this ain't it at all. In fact, while this puts out more
bass than the stock system, it's a very clear bass sound, so I think the
stock system's muddy bass actually sounds better for bass thumping.
However for classical music I think this set up rocks. Classical music,
particularly string and wind instruments and somewhat percussion
instruments, sounds like you are at a concert hall. Also, that music
that I guess falls into classic rock (ELO, CCR, The Who, etc.) sounds
really good - much better than the stock system, but not quite as good
as the classical music sound. The biggest improvement comes in the fact
that the sound is much clearer now. CD's also play better that I'm used
to hearing in cars, and I think it might be that all the hype I hear
about the 24-bit D/A converter is true. I have the bass set to +6 (the
max), the mids set to +3 and the treble set to +3 (though I might drop
that to plus 2, not sure yet).
The FM and AM reception also got better. The AM receptions got
stronger (I pick up stations I couldn't before) and the FM reception got
cleaner (so while I don't think the stations are picking up any
stronger, the weak stations don't have the hiss and junk noise that I
was getting with the stock set up).
One thing worth noting, something about the way this stereo
mounts made it so that when pushed all the way in place, the center
console wood popped forward. I'm sure this is partly because my wood has
already popped out of the plastic backing at the bottom, but I think
it's worth mentioning that the wood has some pressure being put on it at
the bottom. I'll figure out why exactly when I pull the radio out to
zip-tie the wires. This works for me since before mine was already
popped out of the bottom, and no glue that I would be able to remove to
have the wood refinished was able to hold it back, so it used to be
popped out unevenly, and now it's popped out evenly so it looks like
this is how it's supposed to be.
Also, another thing worth noting, this head unit doesn't like
having the faceplate removed. Sometimes when I put it back on the
display will be locked up, but that will be fixed by popping it back off
and putting it back on. Also, one time I couldn't get the display to do
anything other than scroll "Nakamichi Mobile Sound System" without
resetting it via the reset button (which is very odd because it has
never scrolled that text, or any text for that matter, at any other
time). I don't care though, since it's a very minor issue.

Richard,

Great pictures and a very clean installation.

How would you rant the improvement in the sound?
