Sounds pretty petty to me.  Even if the lens cost $1000, or rather is worth
$1000, it is a learning situation.  Accidents happen.  Kids are kids.  If it
were a $1 chemistry glass container, what would they do?  Nothing.

Act like adults.  Give the kids a lecture as appropriate for the sitaution
of dropping ( scolding if it were by misbehavior, and a lesson on how to
prevent the problem in the future) and get on with life.

BTW, a suitable punishment ( if that were the intent of charging them for
the lens) is not to charge the parents, but rather work in the school or
community,  Then the kids learn something.
