Hi Ben!
For the purposes of comparison the depth of field of a 240mm f4.5 will be
similar to your 480 mm f9.  (or a 48mm f0.9!) i.e. minimal.
You could experiment with another such lens to see how critical the
focussing is.  As to whether Mr Grimes made a mistake I would be surprised
if he had but you could send the lens back to his successors for testing  PL
