pine, mutt, elm (text based) are unsurpassed in their ability to
scan and search thousands of messages. both personally and at work
i receive hundreds of email messages a day, and my inbox typically has
over a thousand messages at any given time.

i count on mutt (i happily used elm for years
until i was forced to switch to an imap mail reader) to hack and slash
my way through the jungle that email has become.
