Dear Nephew Philip,

The weight of the Linhof is considerable, of course - but I do not go
clambering over rock faces or hiking out into the Nullarbor for most of my
outdoor pictures. They are generally sedate things close to the back of the
ute. Indeed the weight is part of the attraction.

You see my current 4 x 5 field camera is the World's Rattiest Nagaoka.
It is a mere slip of a thing in the back of a pack but suffers from the
wobbles and shudders whenever it comes out in a wind or has to extend the
bellows out past the baseboard. I want more steadiness.

I am also looking at items manufactured by Horseman and Toyo. In some
respects the finish of these being baked enamel or anodised metal appeals to
me more. I do use a black Linhof monorail in my studio and find it a
wonderful device - couldn't wish for more. But I wonder about its boxy
cousin out in the wind and rain.
