[LargeFormat] Ansel Adams at 100

Valparaiso University had a traveling exhibit of Ansels work. I've said it
before and again here. I was less than thrilled. The original prints on display
varied in quality, that for me I wondered who printed them. There were a
few "doubles" that were printed so differently that I wondered what he was
trying to convey. Perhaps he was in a hurry and thought "thats good
enough". I do not think it was his "vision" that changed. He was getting
older and perhaps sloppy and did not have a good example to base the
newer print from?
Howard Bond gave a great lecture on Adams. He explained how Adams set
a cut off date to any future prints and Dealers ordered so many that he went
well past that date to fill the orders (by years). That would explain the poor
quality.
What I wish this exhibit had had was examples of his commercial work that
is relatively unknown. I took work shops with Adams and I saw what he was
capable of printing. I also saw he could print very fast.

Hi All,

Well, I finally got my butt into Chicago to see the exhibit. It was well
worth the trip traffic parking and such. I don't go downtown often as you
might have guessed. In any case there was some amazing prints there. I was
surprised to see some that appear to be 4x5 contacts. Perhaps they are not
I'm not sure. It was also interesting to see some of the same print printed
at different times of his life this way seeing how his vision changed. The
large prints of Yosemite were as you can imagine very impressive. All and all
it made me want to go into debt for an 8x10 camera. I know sounds silly but
true. At the same time it made me feel that I should just sell it all as I'm
not sure I'll ever get that kind of results. I know he didn't have great
shots all the time but when he did. I suppose I'll just keep plugging along.
