Is the death rate due to ineptitude on the part of the surgeon or the danger inherent in the surgical procedure itself that loses these patients? It is reported that 1 in 200 of these procedures cause operating table death, some 300 people a year. What about those who die a short time after the surgery? Where are the statistics on that? I know one man whose daughter died after the procedure with complications resulting from it. "Harper's" magazine had a story describing someone who by habit could not stop overeating afterward and burst the staples sending him to the emergency room. How many end up dying like this? The size of the stomach vessel has less to do with the habit of overeating than, say, removing the hand holding the fork.
