Connie,

Have pool, don't really exercise. Got any good references on self
inflicted water aerobics?

Subject: Exercise

Francis,

Now why did you submit this? I admire your apparent ability to stick
with restricted calorie intake and healthy food choices, but regular
exercise should not be disparaged.

For some years, I, and others on this list, go to the gym or pool and
work our aging bodies. This morning, I rode my bike to work, 10 miles.
I enjoy it. I do not consider sweating a disease.

In the summer, I teach a water aerobics class which I have to be
certified to do, leading me to study and take tests on the subject of
exercise. From my experience and learning, I tell my class
participants, many of which are hoping for anything to help them lose
weight, that they need to diet to lose weight. Exercise alone will
likely not do it. I have however seen people who have never exercised,
drop pounds when they first start an exercise program. However, in my
opinion, the goal of exercise is strength, improved mobility, more
oxygen, better sleep, looking good, feeling good.

Abdominal exercise can reduce or eliminate back pain.

Ham string workout strengthens the muscles that support the knees,
improving mobility.

Upper body workout improves posture and expands the chest for air
intake.

Good, long stretches improve flexibility.

And, of course, aerobic exercise (hard breathing and really sweating)
strengthens the heart muscles.

More could be said, but you've probably already heard it.

The discipline to regularly get oneself to an exercise class or to the
gym, or even go out for a walk is hard to come by, really hard. Those
that do that should be congratulated.

Sorry to be lecturing, forgive me.

Connie
