Jim,

Welcome to austin-ghetto-list@pairlist.net

Email to that address is automatically redistributed
to our 70 odd subscribers.

The list is dedicated to reminiscing about Ghetto
Daze in 60s Austin and promulgating other lies.

I shall send you off list a copy of the names and
addresses of subscribers.

There is an interesting Web site associated with
the list, http://www.texasghetto.com maintained
by Karen Willis

from Jim Strong:

I got an e-mail from Margot McGann telling me about
the web site and your list. That's why this e-mail
follows.

I think I sort of remember you. I was Plan II in
1960-62. Known then as Billy Strong also "Little Billy
Strong" - the 165 pound terrorizer of that big bully
Henry Holly. Ghetto regular from the beginning. Was
there with Mary Jane Ford the night John Clay (who had
a mad crush on her) decided he was going to take her
away from me but was too drunk on Paisano to do much
of anything. Hung with Mike Gibson before he shot
himself. Caroused with Gil before he drove his Healy
Sprite off the road and into Bull Creek Lodge. Lived
in Win Pratt's dad green rent duplex two blocks off
campus for a year. Dated Fontaine (Orrender back
then) Maverick and hung out at Terralita's house now
and then. Madly in love with Jeannie Wickert (who
lived next door to Jon and Mary Jane Ford). Hated that
big, black great dane across the street who terrorized
all male visitors to Jeannie's place. Bought a 51 or
52 pink Jaguar sedan for $250 with Clark Santos and we
took turns driving it after Clark put in a crankshaft
- he had to pull it from the bottom. Spent a lot of
time at Gil's house shooting the shit with John Silber
(our Plan II director at the time who came to our
parties) when he was a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT. Covered the
Meredith riots in Jackson Miss. for the Daily Texan
with Teresa Kaye Northcott, Joyce Jane Weedman and
Carnie Spinks - we checked into one hotel room using
the name "Phil Desenex." I worked on both the Texan
and the Ranger. I was one of two (Joe E.Brown? and me)
contestants to finish a Green Monster in the Ranger
vs. Texan contest. Organized the "liberation" of the
Fiji "war canoe" from their frat house and took it all
the way to the dam before they caught up with us...
Spent quality time with Ramsey and Lanny Wiggins
(cheeseburgers at their dad's house on Saturdays are a
fond rememberance). Saw their debut at Zilker Park
when Janis sang with them as the Waller (??) Creek
Boys. Still remember a lot of the words to my favorite
John Clay song - "On The Road to Mingus." A leader of
the Irish crew at the Zilker park water ballon fights
- including the time when Shelton and the gang arrived
in the black hearse and we drove them into the night
with the picknicking Baptists (who were in the park
with their children at the time) coming after both of
our groups in hot pursuit. Hung the "Regents is Pigs"
bedsheet from the balcony of their meeting room in the
main building just before they went into session (it
took them 30 minutes to find out it had been done).
Etc etc etc.
--------------------------------------------------
I can't believe somebody actually got this list and
the web site pulled together. When is the next reunion?
