Apple isn’t commenting on reports that it will release a new iPhone for use on Verizon Wireless’s network next year. We find the prospect of a non-AT&T iPhone tantalizing. Could it mean that wireless service providers will finally have to accept real competition?

Michael E. Cohen and Adam C. Engst, TidBITS

For those of us who have spouses, companions, siblings, children, or parents with whom we share both musical tastes and living quarters, the "one person, one media collection" model doesn't work well. Nor does it work well even for one person, if that one person has, for example, a computer in a home office and another in the living room, and wants access to the same iTunes library in both places. What we want is a central iTunes library that everyone on a home network (or using separate user accounts on a single Mac) can share when each of us runs iTunes. But that's not quite what Apple has given us.

It's been over six months since the release of the iPad on April 3rd, and the simultaneous launch of iBooks and the iBookstore, which promised to give Amazon's Kindle and Kindle Store a run for its money. I figured that this would be a good time to see just how the iBookstore has progressed. The answer, in a word: poorly ... very poorly.

Shamim Adam, Bloomberg

Singapore’s economy contracted last quarter as manufacturing eased, and the central bank said it will widen the range its currency can trade in to absorb greater volatility in global financial markets.

Gross domestic product shrank an annualized 19.8 percent in the third quarter from the previous three months after climbing a revised 27.3 percent in the April-to-June period, the trade ministry said today. The median forecast of 19 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was for a 15.7 percent contraction.

**** Singapore’s Third Quarter GDP Growth Within Expectations <http://app.mti.gov.sg/data/article/23082/doc/Advance%20GDP%20Estimates%203Q10.pdf>
Ministry Of Trade And Industry, Singapore Government

The decline in growth momentum was an expected correction from the exceptional growth in the first half of the year. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter annualised basis, the manufacturing sector contracted by 57 per cent in the third quarter, after expanding by 67 per cent in the preceding quarter. This decline is largely attributable to the biomedical manufacturing cluster. Some pharmaceutical companies switched to producing a different value-mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients; there were also some plant maintenance shutdowns during the quarter.

What's missing: flashing lights, free-flowing booze and a lot of the other energy sources that make Vegas an intoxicating place for many visitors—and intolerable for others. In their place, visitors will find plenty of family-friendly activities and shopping, as well as a touch of high-concept design, much of it still under construction.
