**** FileMaker Goes Indie <http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/435/filemaker-goes-indie>
by Daniel Jalkut, Red Sweater Blog
Bento diverges from Apple style by showing all its warts in a public beta: a sort of clunky-yet-intriguing interface design, slow, hangs from time to time with the spinny cursor, the disk image look samateurish, etc. All those cherished mistakes that we indie developers recognize because we've made them ourselves.

**** First Look: Bento Personal Database Software <http://www.macworld.com/2007/11/firstlooks/bento/index.php?lsrc=mwrss>
by Dan Moren, Macworld
The newly unveiled Bento is a lightweight personal database application that, at its core, is about making databases accessible and easy for the casual use—you might call it FileMaker Lite, though that's in no way intended to slight the impressive amount of functionality built in.
/Personally, I am disappointed that this is a Mac-only release. A low-cost high-quality database for both Windows and Mac will be very useful for me./

**** On Myth <http://www.theliberal.co.uk/issue_11/artsandculture/myth_warner_11.html>

Writers don't make up myths; they take them over and recast them. Even Homer was telling stories that his audience already knew.

Everyone who goes to medical school hears this story at some point. Graduation day comes and the new doctors assemble to get their diplomas. The dean gazes out and announces sheepishly: "I'm sorry to tell you that half of what we taught you is wrong. The problem is, we don't know which half."
Nowhere has this been more evident than in genetics.

**** Meals On Reels <http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,,2210638,00.html>
by Feargus O'Sullivan, The Guardian
What is the most famous food scene in all cinema? Could it be Samuel L Jackson interrogating the men he's been hired to kill about European hamburgers and the metric system in Pulp Fiction? Or might it be Debbie Reynolds jumping out of a cake to do the charleston in Singin' in the Rain? Hannibal Lecter's serving suggestions for humanliver in The Silence of the Lambs is among Hollywood's best-remembered lines, while dedicated foodies might plump for any of the scenes celebrating food connoisseurship or gluttony in Babette's Feast or La Grande Bouffe. Ever since I learned as a teenager that the blood spiralling down the plughole in the shower scene from Psycho was actually chocolate sauce, I've been intrigued by the way food is portrayed on screen.

Come to think of it, by imputing an abdication of irresponsibility, lack of commitment and untrustworthiness, when the facts don't support it, the prime minister may have defamed the Workers' Party candidates.

**** 'Naval Presence A Problem' <http://www.todayonline.com/articles/222026.asp>
by Today
Malaysia told the United Nation's highest court yesterday that Singapore was seeking to enlarge its sea border by claiming sovereignty over Pedra Pbranca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge — islets close to key shipping lanes.
"Singapore seeks to disrupt the longstanding arrangements in the straits. Singapore is endeavouring to create for itself a maritime domian," Mr Abdul Kadir Mohamad, an adviser for foreign affairs to Malaysia's prime minister, told the International Court of Justice, which started hearings last week into the territorial dispute between the two countries.
