**** It's Stunning, Powerful And Elegant... So Set The iPhone Free <http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/nov/11/iphone.comment?gusrc=rss&feed=media>
by John Naughton, The Guardian
If you're a techie, you can log into the iPhone using a terminal, and when you do, you see a proper Unix machine. And at that point you begin to see the device in a new light. You also begin to ask some hard questions about the mobile phone business. And about Apple.

Why do I settle for inferior sound quality? Partly because of the near-miraculous convenience of MP3s, which not only can be stored and retrieved with the greatest of ease but are equally easy to purchase over the web via services like Apple's iTunes. But I have another reason, one that I share with millions of other iPod users: I'm middle-aged.

Lots of other improvements and changes abound in Leopard, some practical, some obscure. After running Leopard full time, I want to share some of the little things I've discoverd that I'm either taking advantage of almost daily or that are simply cool.

**** Norman Mailer <http://www.newyorker.com/talk/2007/11/19/071119ta_talk_menand>
by Louis Menand, New Yorker
No one would say of Norman Mailer, who died on November 10th, at the age of eighty-four, that he oarded his gift. He was a slugger. He swung at everything, and when he missed he missed by a mile and sometimes endd up on his tush, but when he connected he usually knocked itout of hte park. He was immodest about his failures and modest about his successes, which is a healthy trait for a writer and probably a healthy trait for life. He left a huge footprint on American letters.

Have just returned from my annual excursion to Singapore. A few days of sanity in the Lion City makes a pleasant break from the relative chaos of Bangkok. But daft though it might sound, after a while you kind of miss the chaos. Singapore is so orderly that even the giant container yards at the docks look neat and tidy.
