Dear MW,
Why is it the knee-jerk response of all psychiatric doctors to medicate
first with happy pills, cure-by-psychoanalysis later? Wouldn't it be
better to figure it out first, and *then* prescribe happy pills, only if necessary?
Yours,
A happily depressed person
____________
Dear Kurt Cobain,
Trust that the doctors will figure me out? No thanks, mate. I'll take
warm fuzzy chemicals over those degree-bearing couch-humpers any day. I
trust chemicals. I *know* what chemicals do.
I've been practicing.
Listen, being a psychologist is just like being an English major, only
your bullshit long-spun theories are about people's souls and lives, not
just their paperbacks. I know these people. I attended college with
them. And when I say I attended college with them, I mean I was
visiting the campus. And by that I mean selling drugs. My point is
that these people can't spell, and they're a bunch of cheese-eating rats.
Face facts, true believer. The brain is an organ. It swims in sugary
red soup, connected to a volcano of evolved meat and electricity.
You're all of one piece - pretending that the mind is something
different that you can just "deal with" through mental power alone is a
self-crippling fantasy. It's like trying to dye your hair by dreaming
of Jeannie.
Sure, talking about your problems, discovering myths that allow your
inner hero to come out, finally spitting in the eye of those who've
wronged you, all that is great -- but only on a level playing field. If
you ain't got the serotonins to ante up for the real game, you gonna be
feeding nickels into the Therapy Slots forever.

'Father, we are here to help each other get through

Write it down, and put it in your computer, so you
