Dear Mr. Wunnafil,

I don't know about the Creepy, Moonlit, Spectacular, or Mexican Ragged
kinds of fog, but a February 1948 concert of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Elisha Cook, Jr. featured a
spectacular but ragged and creepy premiere performance of Aaron
Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Fog,' which was roundly salivated by
an audience of mainly cleft palates.

Rumor has it there is a broadcast transcription of this performance --
the only performance known, as Copland is said to have jealously
absorbed the composition through his pores as it was executed
(apparently the lush acoustics of Symphony Hall yielded a rather dry
sound as a result that night), never to secrete it again. Wouldn't
Copland's unique absorption have robbed the transcription of the sound
of the performance, or did he allow enough time (reportedly fractions of
a second, in this case) for the electronic apparatus to do what it do so
well?

p.s. Do you think it's available on CD?
_______________
Dear Marsupial Sales,

No shit? So *that's* why Copland squeaked like a chorus of rubber
duckies every time you'd land a punch on him. I remember Oppenheimer
and I once had to pummel the composer severely behind a truck stop for
cheating at cards, and the night manager thought we were forcing pigs
onto a calliope.

As for the music played that evening, my understanding was that Mayor
James M. Curley eventually used it to assassinate Babe Ruth later that
year. Clearly, further investigation is warranted.
