O Wise and Wonderful,
Why do North Americans celebrate death at the tail end of October, as
opposed to, say, mid-March or early July?
Yours truly,
Deadhead

Dear Halloweenie,
In mid-March we are busy preparing our livers for the rigors of the
Thirteen Days of Wonder (St. Patrick's Day thru March 30th - "A Keg Of
Guinness A Day Keeps The Reality At Bay!"). It is a time of joy and
tricks and wandering dazed through the streets trying to remember how
you lost your pants. It is spring and the world is waking up and we
have no time for thoughts of death - until we regain consciousness a
couple days later and our throbbing heads remind us why April is the
cruelest month.
Early July is just too damn hot. The zombies would all rot, and then
the children would be sloshing through organs and goo as they made their
candy-begging rounds. It would *never* do if one of them slipped and
bonked her little head.
October's suitability for mortality musings is obvious if one
contemplates the *seasons*, a concept with which, I realize, my readers
from Southern California may not be familiar.
