Dear Sir,
I recently enjoyed the roulette wheel at a gambling house in your fair
city of Las Vegas. Although I played it several times, it seems that
luck was against me.
Do you have any thoughts on how to get Lady Luck to spread her
luxurious bounty on one so humble as yours truly?
Sincerely yours,
Mr. P. Rose

Dear C. Raps,
Wait. Let me get my tongue out of her luxurious bounty first.
Your first mistake, my little lotus, is being ever-so-humble. Fortuna
Favet Fortibus, Infans! In case your Latin is as rusty as my izmel,
that means "Fortune favors the ones who wear purple shirts in Idaho."
Look, Luck is a very sensitive mistress. Indeed, she is capricious.
She runs hot and cold, she gives and takes, she waxes and wanes, she
asks for the chicken then demands the rubber.
Point is: Luck is just fortuitous, not fortunate. If you're always
afraid of what she *might* do, she'll stay away due to your shyness.
Leave you in a perfectly average life. On the other hand, if you
constantly whinge about the black thunder she throws down, she'll think
you don't like her. And you reap what you do sow.
You want Luck's good side? Don't try to control her. Remain open to
her whims. Take all her moods lightly, and never personally. Be a
fool, make a fool's choices, remember you are always at the beginning of
things. Flow, like water, *into* every opportunity and *around* every obstacle.
And don't forget to smile as you cheat.

"Claverhouse," Rebus said wearily. "Do the world a favor
and" - his voice a sudden howl - "*just shut the fuck up!*"
Claverhouse started forwards, Rebus ready to meet him, Hogan
stepping between them, though in the certain knowledge
of being as useful as chocolate handcuffs.
