Dear Curator-of-Wonderful-Labs,
Given that we now have the technology to avoid it, why do we still make
button-down shirts with pleats in the back?

Dear Nehru,
Don't you worry - they're just waiting for the price to come down on straitjackets.
Great humping hornytoads, what *are* you asking about? Why do we need
to "avoid" these pleats? Did they burn down your village? We have the
technology to avoid making books with the word "undulate" in them, yet I
see no pressing need to stop that, either.
Particularly when I'm deep into a good Dickens.
Not to belabor the point, but it seems to me that the
*australopithecus* had the technology to avoid button-down shirts with
pleats in the back. It smelled bad and you couldn't get a cummerbund
around it, but the all-purpose bearskin had hardly any pleats to speak
of.
Why would you stop making a thing just because you can now make
something different or cheaper? Maybe there's an unspoken assumption in
your query about stitching and fabric shortages, but my feeling here is
that I very much enjoy the garter belt and hose combination no matter
what those mad devils at the Hanes Corporation are devising. Do you
follow me?
Mind you, I wouldn't squawk at living in a world of those tear-away
"Logan's Run" numbers. At least not until Miss Yakamoto and I wound up
naked in those ice caves.
