Roger that,
Just had a similar experience with my 93 300CE Sportline.  Because of the 
amount of expressway driving it was not noticible that the  alternator was 
going....but, as I pulled of the expressway she went from a roar to  a pout.
Fortunately I had AAA Plus and they towed the car back to my home base some 
72 miles away  at no expense.
If you do the job yourself, be aware to double chedk the belt tensionor so 
as tt make certain it is functioning correctly, as they do require a change 
out every so often.

I have a 1991 300CE. The other day it died in the middle of a busy road. 
There was no battery power at all, totally dead. Could this be the 
alternator or voltage regulator? Or something else? I thought maybe I could 
fix it myself if someone could point me in the right direction.
