Hello Jack,

You've chosen the best years for the (3.2L) six cylinder engines. From 1990 on, the coupes had the twin cam, 4-valve engine, which transformed the car. Sedans had to wait until '93 for the improved engine. But I'd suggest you look for a '93-'95 model as earlier models transmissions started in 2nd gear unless given full throttle. The Sportline option (coupe only) provided lowered body (3/4") wider wheels, shorter/stiffer springs, supportive seats etc. Hard to find, very collectable and well maintained cars will likely appreciate in value.

Since you didn't specify a coupe in your query, I'd also consider one of the two 4-valve V-8 sedans: 4.2 litre 400E ('92-'93) E420 ('93-95) or better still, the 5 litre 500E ('92-'93) E500 (1994). Both built in small numbers, they had sport packages available as well. Instant collector cars. To the untrained eye, they look like a 300E sedan, making them stealth bombers. Fun!

Good luck,
Mike B.
