Have you ever been hit in the front end?
Checked your motor mounts?
Struts?Does it happen when stopped and turning the steering wheel?
Does it disappear when you splash thru a puddle or have the car washed?
All these wuestions will eventually lead you to some answer.

I have a noise in the front end that occurs usually when I
brake while backing up, but sometimes during hard braking
going forward. The sound is a loud creaking sound - like a
heavy metal gate being opened on rusted hinges. It is not a
continuous sound, but is heard ONLY momentarily during the
transition time when the brakes are first applied and the
suspension is absorbing a lot of energy. It seems that it
May occur as the suspension settles from a hard stop as
well. Definitely coming from the front.

Lower ball joints, rod ends, drag link, & steering box have
all been replaced recently - I expected the noise to go away
when that was done, but it didn't change.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott Kelley
