Rich, I don't have cruise-control in my CE so never paid attention to the ins and outs of it, however remember reading about it in this book:

And it did mention the symptoms you are having. Seems that the CC mechanism needs some "resetting". Might be an "age" thing, but might also be due to a vacuum hose problem around the inlet manifold area - so you might want to check the vacuum hoses there.

Over the weekend, I can "paraphrase" the relevant pages from that manual on cruise-control if you like ?

My 1990 CE  with 47K org miles is starting to breed some gremlins. The cruise control bucks when I first set it at 65 then I switch it off and set again and it jumps from 65 to 80 mph. Some times it will run for some time then start bucking down again.One night I put my windshield washer on and when I pulled in my garage the headlight washer motor was still running after I shut the windshield wiper off and dumped all the washer fluid out. I sure would like some help with this mess, what's wrong, what do I need to fix this???
