[W124] Tyres on 17"

Hi Frank,
I have 17" x 71/2" (et35) on my 124 cab which also has sportline suspension.
It runs 215/45 tyres both front and rear with no problems. I have no
problems with the ride quality and this size tyre also keeps the speedo
reading accurate.
I agree with Steve's advice re the ABS problem but I just wonder if the
problem is not connected to your tyre sizes. You have not got ASR on your
car so your ABS operates on the two front wheel sensors and the one on the
rear diff. As you have differing size tyres with differing rolling
circumferances fitted front to rear I imagine this is the cause of your
intermittent ABS problem.
Particularly at higher speeds, the differing speed signals from front to
rear will cause the ABS unit to interpret this as a skidding problem. I have
heard of this problem happening when somebody fits a spare wheel which is
not of the exact same size as the wheel it replaces. So maybe if you sort
your tyres first the ABS problem may just go away !!!
Regards,
Declan McDermott.
