Hi All,

My 1990 300CE-24V has develop a low idle that has been bugging me for sometime. My mechanic tried everything and came up zilch.

Defect: Car has problem starting. Needs more than one attempt anytime it has been switched off more than 5 minutes. Once started it seems to go to 1500rpm then drop to less than 500rpm and yoyos a few times before settling to a hi-idle of about 1000rpm. Load aicon and it drops to 800rpm. Put in gear and it drops and comes back to 800rpm. So far so good.
Drive for 5 minutes. Stop (like at the traffic lights) and the idle gets rough indicating below 500rpm, sometimes as low as 200rpm. Drive off is okay. Once the car gets going, it still drives well. Acceleration and cruise is fine.
It just can't idle smoothly!

Tried/checked: airflow meter (the whole body), idle contol valve, fuel flow regulator, with and without air filter, ECU, Overload relay, fuel distributor, fuel injectors, engine mounts, vacuum hoses & wiring checked. Replaced fuel filter, both fuel pumps, fuel accumulator, ignition cable, spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap.
My mechanic now thinks it's the EZL control unit. The problem is it's not stock locally in Malaysia and has to be ordered at a high price. Before I do that can any of you point me in the right direction please.

Thank you,
Sam
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Still can't find a better car to drive for the money!

I have been reading the comments about warning lights on my 300CE .... it had the "light out" warning on when I bought the car and I took it back to the dealer. His mechanic rigged up a parallel wire to the front parking light which allowed it to get power, but I still have the "light out" signal on the dash. How can I eliminate that situation; cut the original wire, find the block where it originates and check all the old wiring to the parking light or ??? Thanks, Ben Carter

Hi Ben,

I have a 93 300E which had the exact same problem. What I found out was
this:

1) check to see that all the bulbs are the correct bulbs, this is
critical, if you are using the wrong bulb the bulb may work but you will get
a light out sensor light
2) check and make sure that your rear brake light on the back dash is
working and is using the correct bulb, this was where my problem was. This
drove me crazy but I finally solved the problem. I also had a few of the
wrong bulbs installed in different places. Mercedes uses their own bulbs
which look identical to US counterparts BUT THEY ARE NOT ! ! ! I REPEAT
THEY ARE NOT ! ! ! ! ! I bought a ½ dozen bulbs at my dealer and went
through the entire car. NOW it’s fine.

I hope this helps you.

           Kevin

Baz,

Sounds like no fresh air is entering the car,, and you are just recycling
the stale air inside.

Could be the air inlet (at the base of the screen) is blocked with leaves or
other crap.

Also worth checking that the flap that closes when you move the LH control
to OFF, actually opens when you turn it on.....
