Hello retro fans,

here are the solutions of the Christmas Contest.

The original German version is available here:
http://kaniaverlag.de/htm/Sonstige%20Berichte.html

Here is my (shortened) translation:

55 participants sent their solotions. The winners are:

1. price (Apple I-Pod): Dietmar Fauth, Munic
2. price (Falk-Navigationsystem): Jürgen Berthel, Stuttgart
3. price (Apple I-Pod Nano): Martin Kummer, Karlsruhe

15 participants solved all five probelems. These are:

Dietmar Fauth (Munic)
Jürgen Berthel (Stuttgart)
Martin Kummer (Karlsruhe)
Olli Heimo (Helsinki)
Hannu Lehto (Kerava/Finland)
Mario Richter (Berlin)
Silvio Baier (Dresden)
Norbert Geissler (Munic)
Randolf Eilenberger (Dossenheim)
Markus Knapp (Karlsruhe)
Gerson Berlinger (Bad Friedrichshall)
Paul Maier (Backnang)
Rolf Sandau (Oberstenfeld)
Jens Guballa (Tamm)
Rolf Schreiber (Stuttgart)

They all will receive a book price.

Problem E was the most difficult one, but solving B correctly was
decisive as some experts overlooked the solution wQa7.

A:
Two solution:
+bKh1, 1. Kf2# and
+bKc6, 1. Qb5#.

+bKb2? 1. Ra2 and +bKd3 1.0-0-0 fail because black does not have a last
move.

B:
Two solutions:
+wRa8+, last move was b7:Ra8=R+ (last black move was a rook move to a8)
+wQa7+, last move was Qa8:Na7+

+wRa7? fails as well as +wPb5+, as black does not have a last move.

C:
a) 1.a4 Nc6 2.a5 N:a5 3.h4 Nc6 4.h5 Nb8 5.h6 N:h6 6.R:a7 Ng8 7.Ra1.
b) 1.h4 a5 2.Rh3 Ra6 3.Ra3 Rh6 4.R:a5 R:h4 5.a4 R:a4 6.Rh5 Ra8 7.Rh1.

D:
The aim is to prevent the black castling and at the same time take
control of the square f7. The aim is reached by proving that the white
a-pawn has promoted on a8.
1.Bd3:Pe2! e3-e2+ 2.Ke2:Bf1 f2-f1B+ 3.Bc4:Pd3 d4-d3+ 4.Kf1:Re2!

Now the black pawns have captured nine times. The white pawns captured
three times. The black pawns never captured on the a-file, thus the
white a-pawn promoted without any capture on a8, before being captured
by the black pawns. Therefore 1... 0-0-0 is illegal.

And now 1. h7 and 2. h8=Q#.

E:
All missing chess men have been captured by the pawns, thus only pawns
may retract capturing moves. Pd2:e3 may not be retracted at the moment
(wBb6!). Retracting the h-pawn must be done with care, as the black
king must enter into the white position via g2.

Solution:
1.Rc1-a1+! d5-d4! (e5:Rd4? is useless) 2.g5:Nh6! (The only way to place
a chess man on the board which can move to b1, making a1 available for
the black king) Nf5-h6 (other night routes are possible as well)
3.Rb1-c1 Nd4-f5 4.Rc1-b1 Nb5-d4 5.Rb1-c1 Na3-b5 6.Rc1-b1 Nb1-a3!
7.g5-g4 Ka1-a2 8.g3-g4! (Ka3-a4? Nc3-b1+ and now?) e6:Bd5! (Next phase:
removal of the bNb1 to allow the black king moving to a3. The Nb1 will
be replaced by a wB.) 9.Ba2-d5!, Nd2-b1 10.Bb1-a2+ Ne4-d2 11.Ka3-a4.

Now the bNd1 can move, and the position is released. The white rook
leaves the first rank, the wBb1 as well. The bK moves to g2 and h3.

1. Rb1-a1+? fails by a tempo.

Best regards,
Jens
