Dear retro friends,

here are the resolutions of the Christmas Contest by Harald Keilhack.

The German version is available here:
http://www.kaniaverlag.de/htm/Sonstige%20Berichte.html

Here is my translation into English:

Among the 48 senders the following winners (A+B correctly solved) were
drawn by lot:

1. Price (Apple I-Pod Touch): Rudolf Rüther (Stuttgart)
2. Price (Falk navigation system): Thomas Lutzius (Stuttgart)
3. Price (Apple I-Pod Nano): Martin Pfleiderer (Korntal-Münchingen)

Only four partcipants succeeded in solving all problems correctly,
which was particularly because of the super-difficult puzzle D, which
was solved by seven readers only.

Here are the names of the experts:

Olli Heimo (Helsinki)
Silvio Baier (Dresden)
Jens Guballa (Tamm)
Thomas Lutzius (Stuttgart)

Only one problem was incorrectly solved by Norbert Geissler (Munic),
Markus Knapp, Martin Kummer (Karlsruhe), Ronald Schäfer (Aalen), Randolf
Eilenberger (Dossenheim), Markus Zehender (Ulm), Gerson Berlinger (Bad
Friedrichshall), Paul Maier (Backnang) and Martin Pfleiderer (Korntal).
They all receive a book price.

And now here are the resolutions:

A: There are two solutions:
a) + wQc5 und 1.Q:a7#.
b) +wBd8 and 1...Q:d4# -
Black is allowed to give check mate, as he does not have a
last legal move. E.g. d7:c6 (Bd8?!) as well as b7:c6 are not legal,
because in this case the Bd8 und Ba8 are promotees and counting the
captures proofs the illegal position, as the Rh8 could not have been
captured by the white pawns.

B: Three solutions.
a) back Bc1:Ra3, 1.Rb2#.
b) back Bc1:Pa3; 1.Ra2 Patt.
c) back Bc1:Pa3; 1.Be2 (Zugzwang) 1...a2# (forces self mate!)

C: Solution:
Back: 1.e5:d6 e.p. d7-d5 2.Nh6-g8 0-0-0+ 3.Nf5:Ph6!, and forward:
1.g8Q#. White must uncapture a pawn on h6, to give black a last move
(h7-h6). En-passant, castle, promotion. Keyms popular Valladao task.

D: Solution:
+wRh8. Retro: Bc1 and Bf1 have been captured on their original squares,
one piece was captured on c6. Thus one white pice for capture is left.
Therefore the bPh7 never left the h-file, and the wPh2 captured two
times and promoted on h8. Black may retract h7-h6 only if white retracts
Pg:h, and d7:c6 happened before the wR entered the 8th rank. Therefore
the key idea is to retract the castling! Black then is forced to
uncapture a piece on g8.

1.Kb1-c2! f7-f6 2.Rc1-c4 h3-h2 3.Rd1-c1 h4-h3, 4.Kc1-b1 h5-h4 5.0-0-0!
h6-h5 (the black pawn moves may happen in any order) 6.Rh7-h8!.
Now black must uncapture the piece on g8, and this must be a night
(otherwise retro stalemate): 6... Rh8:Ng8 7.Nf6-g8, and instead forward
Ne5-d7#

E: Solution:
Back: 1...Ra2-b2+ 2.b4:Nc5! Ne4-c5 3.g6-g7 Nf2/Ng3-e4 4.g5-g6 Nh1-f2
5.g4-g5 h2-h1N 6.g3-g4 h3-h2 7.f3-f4 g4:Bh3! (not 7...g4:Nh3?: one tempo
will be missing) 8.f2-f3!! g5-g4 9.Bd7-h3 g6-g5
10.Be8-d7 g7-g6 11.e7-e8B d6-d5 12.e6-e7 d7-d6 13.e5-e6 h6-h5 14.e4-e5
h7-h6 15.e2-e4 e3:Nd2. So far the solution must have been given. Two
Ceriani-Frolkin pieces, (2nd and 7th move!).

Best regards,
Jens
