The entry "Antichess" relies on Pritchard's book "Popular Chess Variants", and in this book, the relevant chapter has the title "Losing Chess" (!). The entry "R?uberschach" relies on Binnewirtz's book "Schlagabtausch im R?uberschach", in which the basic chapter of this book has the title "Die Regeln des Schlagschachs" (!), and the term "Schlagschach" is used in all following chapters. Perhaps only the publisher preferred the more colloquial "R?uberschach"... It should be mentioned that Karl Fabel, who was very fond of Schlagschach, also used this term in the book "Schach ohne Grenzen/Chess Unlimited", which he wrote together with C.E. Kemp. He treats it as the German equivalent of Dawson's term "Losing Game". In any case, clarity is import, and the two established terms "Schlagschach" and "Losing Chess" cannot be confused with anything else. Furthermore, "Die Schwalbe" uses the term "Schlagschach", and "The Problemist" uses the term "Losing Chess". For the sake of clarity, I recommend that German- and English-speaking composers follow this tradition. Hi, Euclide, Natch and Popeye are programs to solve Proof Games only (in fact Popeye can also solve a huge amount of non-retro problems). Don't know much about them since i don't like much PGs. But they are light in size so you can have them all. Also you shall know Fancy is an interface to Popeye. Retractor allows the user to set up a position and to unplay (ie play back) the position, with unmove, uncapture, unpromote... I sometimes use it to find the solution to standard retros (release the position, where was captured...) It has some checking for retro incompatibilities (pawn structure compatible with the number of captures, etc...). It also has features to automatically solve a position (didn't really tested it) and for retracor problems (not tested). It's rather buggy IMO, but it's the only program of its kind i know of, so well worth the look. iNatch is "simply" a handy interface for playing games. It's oriented toward PG problems (Monochromatic, Einstein chess...). All the programs are freeware, and seem to work correctly though they sometimes need to get your hands in the dirt (ie lousy or no interface). regards, Alain From sobrecases at yahoo.fr Fri Aug 22 06:26:32 2008 From: sobrecases at yahoo.fr (Guy Sobrecases) Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2008 10:26:32 +0000 (GMT) Subject: [Retros] CORRECTION : Retros Digest, Vol 46, Issue 4 In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <860495.63178.qm@web25216.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> ? (And even in German, there are other names for it, for example "R?uberschach"). Dawson used the name "Losing Game", and nowadays, "Losing Chess" is most generally accepted (and thus preferable to "Capturechess" and other alternatives). In French, the name is "Qui perd gagne". He tried to show economical representations of the Pronkin theme (a piece is captured, and a promoted piece takes its place on the homesquare). Economy criteria used: - The number of unthematic captures should be minimal (ideally 0) - The number of moves should be minimal - The number of officers on their homesquare should be as large as possible If you have improvements, you can send them to silvio.baier at gmx.de. Because of the number of compositions (there are almost 40 originals in this article!), I've decided to use Xboard to generate a PGN file. I've already found one (trivial) improvement, while reading: s: rsbqkbsr/ppp1pppp/8/5B2/4PB2/1Q2P3/PPP2PPP/RS2K1SR (16+15) SPG11.0 (one more piece 'at home') Joost -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't know what POC means but you're right, Retractor was written for a school project (undergraduate, actually, not master's). There is still much that could be done with it, particularly with the solver, and unfortunately I have not had time to work on it further. But I'm glad to hear that people are still using it, 10 years later ... I'm using it with a display resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels a very long time, and I never had the problem you described - so the reason for your difficulties must be something else. If my assumption is correct that you are using WindowsXP as your OS, than you might try to set the compatibility options for the "Retractor" program correctly. Marko>> yes it's the latest version. The program is old (from 1998). Maybe we can also use this discussion to define the requirements for a retrograde analysis program. I'll start with my personal experiences when using 'Retractor': On the 'plus' side: + the only publically available RA program + free usage (you do not have to pay for it) + graphical user interface + good and fast for 'Last n moves' problems + FEN input configurable (so I can use 'N' for knight and am not forced to use 'S' for knight as popeye does) + has a rather strong pawn capture analysis + a lot of non-trivial cages are detected + allows at least some user intervention: * w/b 'peacefulness' * specification of w/b promotions On the 'minus' side (please have in mind, that the program is from 1998, so some points can be simply explained by the limitations of HW and SW of that time!): - some trivial king cages are not detected - some simple illegalities are not detected - the number of variations is limited to 30 - the above mentioned parameter settings (promotions/peacefulness) are not permanently visible - no warning, that the program is limited to approx. 99 last single moves (after saving a longer retractions at least some information gets lost, sometimes the program hangs up totally, if such a *.ret file is reloaded) - if one first makes some retromoves by pointing and clicking, and than calls the Resolve function, the moves so far are lost (the help therefore gives the advice to always save the game before starting a reosultion. O.k. - but I'm often forgetting it - so in this case an on/off-switchable message "Resolving will destroy the game so far" would be nice ...) - no explanation (= the reason), why e.g. a position has a 'Bad pawn structure' -- most severe (and at least to some extent a k.o. criteria): some *legal* positions are judged by 'Retractor' as *illegal*. Concerning illegalities, i was pleased at Retractor handling them until i tried to solve Dragan Petrovic's Circe RA. ;) What i would really look forward is not a program that can handle retro analysis, only a program that allows the user to unplay a position. It would even be better if one could try different lines (as in forward chess). But of course the analysis of Mario is really valuable, it will make me look a bit deeper at Retractor. A double-check, which can be explained by a capturing pawn that promotes. This also illustrates the big dilemma for all programmers of RA-programs: on the one hand, rules should be as general as possible, on the other hand, one has to be very careful, that rule doesn't match situations, where its application leads to wrong results. Here the rule seems to be something like "If a king is in check by two enemy pieces, and none of this enemy pieces can interfere the checking line of the other piece, than the position is illegal." This works in most positions, but forgets the case, that one of the enemy pieces may change his shape while retracting - by unpromotion. e.g. 5QN1/8/5k2/8/8/8/8/7K (w: Qf8 Ng8 Kh1 b: Kf6) or 5R1B/8/5k2/8/8/8/8/7K (w: Rf8 Bh8 Kh1 b: Kf6) 'Retractor' rejects the above positions with the message: "Error: This position places your king in an illegal double check." I set compatibility to Windows 95 but it didn't help. Also tried Windows 98, again without success. And you are right, I am using Windows XP. If you can think of anything else for me to try, I would appreciate it.
