Mark, First, white/lithium grease wouldn't be my first choice for lubrication of the hinge points on the top....suggest a drop or two(no more!) of sewing machine oil; very thin, highly penetration/lubricating and use very sparingly. Your other question about oil, I assume you mean for the top hydraulic system. It takes either MB '$pecial' hydraulic fluid from the dealer, or Febi/Bilstien Hydraulic Fluid, p/n 02615, available from most of the online mb parts suppiers. Since the fluid in your reservoir is 9yrs old, suggest you buy 2 ltrs of hydraulic fluid, and remove the old fluid and replace with new. Bob **************Need a job? If there is a issue with the soft-top, take the spare wheel out of the trunk, look underneath the cover where the hydraulic motor and liquid reservoir is. Let the top come up and when it becomes slow or stopped, look if you can see any hydraulic oil in the reservoir. If it is empty, you have two chances. First fill up with original hydraulic oil from your MB dealer and if it then works OK, look how long it last. The reason from missing oil is leakage in the hydraulic lines or cylinders, and if the leakage is great, the oil flows out and the pressure drops so the movement becomes slow. But if there is only less leakage there is no problem, otherwise you should find the leak and repair. Then there is the possibility that the piston in main cylinder leaks, so there is not enough pressure. Or more pistons in the system leaks and must be revised, what can with reasonable costs. And off course there can be air in the system, if there was to less oil. -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: r129list-bounces at mbcoupes.com [mailto:r129list-bounces at mbcoupes.com] Namens asim razvi Verzonden: zondag 8 maart 2009 17:03 Aan: r129list at mbcoupes.com Onderwerp: [R129 SL] Soft top slows down First of all, to the Flying Dutchman you are a class act and at least you have the car, my wife accuses me of? having a midlife crisis because I have the SL, a bmw convertible and now another bmw.? But i think its a good thing that i share my experience on the Softtop issue About two years ago i was active on this forum, looking for ways to get my softtop to work .. I had similar issues to most of us here.. It was not until i got the diagrams from Jan that i started to understand how the soft top worked. In short i pulled out all 12 cylinders and had them serviced. Now you can't pull all out at once, since the softtop needs to move to get access to some. When i say service, i had a local machine shop pull apart the cylinder and replace the o-ring. However they never worked .. they all leaked since the o-rings were not to spec and there might have been slight damage on the shafts. So eventually .. i bit the bullet and purchased all 12 cylinders from Mercedes Benz in Pompano, FL. It cost about 2,300 usd. Now the soft top works near to perfect. I say near to perfect since the toggle switch light still blinks all the time and the roll bar light blinks also. Other than that .. the movement of the top is like new. My next project is offcourse to get the lights to stop blinking. For the blinking lights you first must control with the manual tool if all the slots in front and trunk are good clesed so that the switch is activated. If one switch makes no contact, the light wil be armed en a beep will sound If not, you got my drawings and i will think about it Gretings from the flying dutchmen -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: r129list-bounces at mbcoupes.com [mailto:r129list-bounces at mbcoupes.com] Namens Anil M Seunath Verzonden: maandag 9 maart 2009 13:07 Aan: SL Mailing List Onderwerp: [R129 SL] My story : SL280 Softtop Gents : Its been a while since I've looked at the forum which probably means i have not had any issues as of late. Thanks to the Flying Dutchman for all your help Anil Seunath Trinidad W.I. Geen virus gevonden in het binnenkomende-bericht.
