Mine 89 500SL had a lot of electrical problems, like intermitted alarm during driving, problems with the lights, windows, seats etc. Replacing all the fuses for new solved all the problems. That is because the old fuses are made of lead. And the lead become corroded and will intermitted the contact. Checking the fuse will scratched the lead so the fuse will make contact for some time. Change them for new, the new are made from a other material, what is better against corroding. Just caught up with this thread. I had a similar intermittent fault on my driver's window for about 18 months. It gave up the ghost a month ago. Having replaced all fuses, checked switch operation (by swapping the passenger switch), relay and removing door panel to check power was reaching the connector for the motor, I ended up removing the motor to find it was full of water! I decided to replace it and the whole job was amazingly easy - maybe 90 minutes total (new motor ?175). > Message du 11/07/08 22:30 > De : moon.cusser at verizon.net > A : "SL Mailing List" > Copie ? : > Objet : Re: [R129 SL] Window and Rollbar > > > On Thu, 10 Jul 2008 20:38:17 -0400, you wrote: > Hi all, > Now this is just spooky... I was driving in the local area when all of a sudden something broke and it began running rough and the check engine light came on. I have a hand held diagnostic device which plugs into the computer connector located under the dash on the driver's side. (I think these things only work on 1996 and later vehicles) but I discovered that my number one cylinder's coil (each cylinder on the Benz has its own coil located at the top of the spark plug connector and it was one of these that went south on my SL. I ordered a new coil from a local shop and put it on myself at a minimal cost. The only way I would have known which one it was without a lot of troubleshooting was because the hand-held tester told me which cylinder was misfiring. Another thing: Reminder to all SL owners - don't overlook the cabin air filter when servicing your vehicle. It's surprising but this is one filter that gets forgotten in the SL. It is quite large and you will see it has two screws on the cover which must be loosened and three snap clips at the front edge which can be snapped open using a long thin screwdriver as a pry bar. Before you can remove the cover to get at the filter you must loosen the rubber weather-strip at the back which is just an interference fit and can easily be removed. Also, because the filter is located in this kind of awkward position to get into I always open the hood (or bonnet if you prefer) into a fully opened vertical position. This is done by releasing the two stops located at each side where the hood levers are located. You will see a dowel size pin which can be released (don't worry, the hood won't fall because they have it nicely counterbalanced) once released the hood can be opened to the full vertical position where the levers will snap into place and hold it in that position safely. To get it back you just again release the dowel type pins and reverse the process. One person can do this comfortably but you will want to have help for the first go-round. Doing the opening this way is a convenient way to work along the back side of the engine but, of course, is optional depending on your comfort zone. I will look for you out on the road. This was caused by the spindle and gears needing some greasing. As George correctly suggested the additional torque needed from the motor drew additional current this blowing the fuse. My friends at the local MB garage also told me they would take a look at the relay as this is quite frequently the cause so they tell me. But on this occasion they found it was a stiff mechanism. I cannot remember who suggested using a bigger fuse as a solution to my problem but this is never advisable, fuse sizes are selected for a specific reason and using a larger amp rated fuse could result in serious damage to the electrics.
