The Trunk mounted CD player in my '95 500 SL
just quit playing.  The lites are on on the trunk unit ,
the  dash unit goes silent for about 10 seconds when
you push CD , then reverts to whatever station you were
tuned to.

Mine did the same ('98 SL500).  It is an Alpine brand
unit.  The repair turned out to be a good cleaning and
the problem was a sticky load mechanism.

Opened it up, carefully vacuumed it out, cleaned all
moving parts with alcohol on q-tips and after dry, put
it back in the car.  Pretty low tech, acually.

straight forward, as I recall.  I did the work many
months ago.  Please remember that the unit is ALWAYS
hot with power.
