Brussels, 22nd May 2000
informed the General Affairs
Council of EU Member States about the WTO accession agreement signed
between the European Commission and China last Friday.
it was a good result and congratulated the Member States for their
solidarity during the sometimes difficult negotiations.
Council of Ministers and European Parliamentary
approval will follow after the completion of the multilateral process
at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), expected during the course of
this summer.
On insurance, seven licences will become available for insurance
companies within three months of the signature of the agreement,
before China's accession to WTO.
On mobile telephones, it was clear the Chinese would not budge for
"internal political reasons". However, the Chinese agreed to speed
up market access
On the US reaction to the deal, the overall result "can
only be good news" for the Americans and the PNTR vote in US Congress
this week because "they will get on top of what they got, what we
got".
